Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary

Sandakan, Sabah

3-hour visit
can organize on your own or
...we used Borneo Ecotours and combined the Turtle/Organutan pkg with the Kinabatangan Wildlife pkg
. Well worth it!

Did you know?

  • human beings and orangutans share 96.4% of the same human genes

  • orangutans are only indigenous to Borneo, MALAYSIA and Sumatra, INDONESIA

  • orangutans are dying out at an alarming speed due to their homes (the jungle) being razed for "economic" purposes, the illegal pet trade, etc. The Sepilok Sanctuary rescues as many of these beautiful primates as possible and raises/rehabilitates them to be independent creatures capable of full and independent functioning in the wild. To date, Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary has successfully rehabilitated and released 300 orangutans back into the wild.

This Sanctuary is run by Orangutan Appeal UK.

The Appeal strives to protect remaining wild populations of orangutans by providing support and funding for projects across Malaysian and Indonesian Borneo; and by raising awareness of the plight of this great ape across the globe. The Appeal is also authorised to work on behalf of the famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre!"

Adopt an Orangutan Program

The Sanctuary has a terrific program where one can adopt an orangutan. Well, you don't actually take one home with you but together with many other people your adoption donation (RM 150) helps support an orangutan for one year with the option to continue sponsoring your ape right up until he/she is released into the wild. Currently it costs about $15,000/year to provide the food, shelter, medicines, doctor fees, etc. for an orangutan. Below is the little girl I adopted. About 2 weeks after getting back from Christmas '07 holidays a packet arrived in the mail with this and another photograph, an adoption certificate plus lots of information on Baby Sogo-Sogo. How can you turn away from this face???
